Words that Last Forever

Go back to where Jesus began this discourse on the “end of the age.” How did it begin? It began with the disciples observing the beauty of the temple. 25 verses later Jesus continues to teach about the coming end of the age. Why?

Because it will happen. Because Jesus wants us to be ready for the end. Because Jesus loves us.

In today’s passage Jesus includes a short parable…about understanding signs.

“And he told them a parable: “Look at the fig tree, and all the trees. As soon as they come out in leaf, you see for yourselves and know that the summer is already near. So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near. Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all has taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.”  Luke 21:29-33

If you’ve read the words of Jesus about the coming end of the age with skepticism, you’ve painted yourself into a corner. Doubting Jesus is foolish. If the words of Jesus in Luke 21 have seemed beyond real-unbelievable-the words of Jesus in verse 33 leave no doubt:

“Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.”

There is no way around what Jesus said. And He said the end of things WILL come. Every word of Jesus comes to pass. Jesus never wastes words. Jesus does not threaten us…He speaks in love to you and me. Unlike the meaningless rhetoric of humans, the words of Jesus will never pass away. The words of Jesus are forever truth. Truth is what you and I need to live every day. Do not expect truth from sinful humans…do not look for truth from the world.
