Who Are the Unworthy Servants?

Who are the unworthy servants? When Jesus spoke the words “unworthy servants” He was teaching. The teaching of Jesus is eternal. Who are the unworthy servants?

“When a servant comes in from plowing or taking care of sheep, does his master say, ‘Come in and eat with me’? No, he says, ‘Prepare my meal, put on your apron, and serve me while I eat. Then you can eat later.’ And does the master thank the servant for doing what he was told to do? Of course not. In the same way, when you obey me you should say, ‘We are unworthy servants who have simply done our duty.’” Luke 17:7-10

Who are the unworthy servants?

Grab something solid-you and I are.

But if we have chosen to deny God- we are not even unworthy servants. The is another word for those who deny God-adversary.

Isn’t Jesus too harsh?

Unworthy? Try undeserving. Next try unqualified.

It is more than fair.

Remember the reason for our unworthiness? Sin. It’s our idols, lies, hatred, coveting, pride, cursing…we both know-that human quality that causes evil-sin. Sin makes us unworthy, undeserving, and unqualified for God’s Grace.

But what about servants? Does Jesus mean we to be God’s attendant?

Stop and think.

What is the origin of your life/mine? What is the source of life? Where do fingers, toes, minds, 5 senses, reason, muscles, bones, ligaments, sinews and all the other intricate parts of the human body originate? How are the human circulatory and respiratory systems designed? Consider the intricacies of the human eye. Where does reason originate?

Do not be deceived by human explanations. They are untrue.

Look at the night sky. Watch the sunrise, watch it set…wait for the moon. Feel the wind on your skin, touch the surface of a lake, drink a glass of water.

God is the Creator of all things. Period-case closed. God owes you and me nothing. You and I deserve nothing but swift death. We have shaken our fists in God’s face! He is over all things. Sovereign.

But God…

Gives us life.

Gives us His love…freely.

Saves us from destruction…

and sends Jesus to die for our sins.

What should we do?

Seek His forgiveness.

Be His unworthy much-loved servant.
