Forever Foundation

Ever thought of your life as a house? No, likely not-a house is not alive. It is much larger. A house cannot talk. There is little in human existence we could say is like a house. But Jesus made both of us. He knows us more completely than we know ourselves. He can compare our lives to a house. He did.

The comparison works. Surprised? The Creator of the universe also made both of us. He knows how to get our attention. He what words to use that we might understand Him. In the New Testament, the writer of the book of Luke (yes, that would be Luke) recorded the words of Jesus as He taught people about what to build the human life around.  Jesus used houses. Specifically, He compared two home builders to you and me.  And in this teaching Jesus taught that what is unseen is more important than what is seen. But He didn’t say that in specific words. This truth is implied.

First question-how is your foundation? We both have one. We can think of our life view as afoundation. Read the words of Jesus on the subject...

““Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.””

Luke 6:46-49

See it? We have two choices for our individual lives:

1.       Choose to do life ourselves. Let’s call this the DYI method.

2.       Choose to listen to Jesus and His teaching and build our lives on what He teaches. Let’s call this the Jesus method.

Now for another question…Which option looks better?

To help you decide consider one more question...

If you were going to build a whole house, would you-do it yourself or contract a builder who knows how?

I heard from a person today who said, “I’d do it myself.” Now, a well-built house might stand 200 years or more. But how sturdy is a DYI house? Do we actually think we can “build” a house without knowing how first?Even if someone gave us all the materials for a house, where would we begin? And remember-Jesus is speaking of building a forever house- your life, my life forever.

We can choose. There are two ways for every human to build a forever life.

We can do it ourselves.

OR

We can ask the Creator of the World.

He knows exactly how.

He never fails.
