Watch the Sparrows

Have you forgotten about “Bird Therapy?”

Sorry, Creator Words is not going to let you.

And you had already moved on to life without birds…my apologies.

Return to the birds with me…

Really, you ought to pay more attention.

You are not too busy for birds.

The truth is… neglecting bird observation can be detrimental to your emotional health.

It’s True…

Some facts first. Think about sparrows.

How many sparrows are there world-wide?

This will astound you…here is the number:

9,896,945,389.

Now that number…in words-

Nine billion, eight hundred ninety-six million, nine hundred forty-five thousand, three hundred eighty-nine…sparrows of all species in the world.

Don’t quote me as an expert, this number is an estimate.

Honest, keep your eyes on the sparrows.

We should wonder why are there so many sparrows.

We could go into all the biological reasons.

We won’t.

Why so many sparrows?

Ready?

To remind us God is always near.

That’s right!

God put billions of sparrows on earth to remind us He loves us.

Are life’s problems pressing in?

Keep your eyes on the sparrows.

It works!

Christian Song writer Civilla D. Martin (1866-1945) made the sparrow the topic of one of her hymns.

The words of the first verse give you an idea what happens when we watch the sparrows…

Why should I feel discouraged, why should the shadows come,

Why should my heart be lonely, and long for heav’n and home,

When Jesus is my portion? My constant Friend is He:

His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;

His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

    Refrain:

I sing because I’m happy, I sing because I’m free,

For His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

Civilla D. Martin, 1905

Most hymns have a back story.

Civilla D. Martin wrote this hymn based on her experience with the Doolittles.

Both were invalids.

She bedridden for nearly 20 years.

He needed a wheel chair to get to his place of work.

These afflictions would discourage and dishearten most people.

Not the Doolittles.

Mrs. Martin asked them what makes you so cheerful, so happy?

Mrs. Doolittle’s response was simple: ‘His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.’

Dear Creator Words reader…does life knock you down?

Are you discouraged?

Is there despair in your heart?

Look at the sparrow.

God gives us many chances to be reminded.

There are over 9 billion of them. (The current population of India is 1.2 billion!)

Watch the sparrows…

God’s eye is on the sparrow…

He sees you…and me…

We too can say, “I know He watches me.”

Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.  So, don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. Matthew 10:29-31
