Sing the Mighty Power of God
What does it mean to sing? Is singing musical talk? OK, hum, keep the words muted. Is singing the production of musical tones with the voice? That’s the definition of singing. If you are like me the creation of musical tones with my voice is not always musical to others. Remember this, singing is not always a mission to make music. Singing is also celebrating…in words. A poem can be a song without music. And poems can give praise and acclaim.
There is a lot to sing praise for. Humans are sensory beings. Our principle sense is sight. But the other four add significant sensory experiences which heighten our life on the earth. Our senses enable us to see the sun rise and set. We see the colors of the sky, the movement and shape of clouds. We hear the wind rustle the grass around us. We can smell the air freshened by evening dew. The touch of the breeze on our skin cools us on a sultry hot day.
There are always many reasons to sing praise. Always…with every day of our lives there are things for which we can sing praise. If we are alive, there is air for breath. If we are alive, there is a steady heartbeat. As long as life lasts there are 24 hours in each day. There is nothing we can do to change any one of these three constants, they are gifts. We take them for granted. But don’t beat yourself up. Instead, remember these are gifts. Life…and all that is bundled with it-a gift. Money cannot buy this gift. God gives it. Coming from God, the gift of life is the greatest treasure any human can have. With life all other things which transpire in human endeavor are possible.
Now for a thank you. My friend Mike reminded me of these gifts early this week. We had visited the day before. When we visit, it is not long before the topic of the infinite greatness of God comes up. His response to our conversation was to send me a text message the next day. His message had a YouTube recording of a hymn attached. He motivated me to think about singing of the mighty power of God.
One more thing…you know the mighty power of God is what this blog is all about. The mission of Creator Words is to sing the mighty power of God. With every photo, every word…sing the mighty power of God is the reason for Creator Words. Friends are another evidence of the mighty power of God. Thank you, Mike.
It is not only contemporary people who celebrate the mighty power of god. In 1715 Isaac Watts published Divine Songs Attempted in Easy Language for the Use of Children. Mr. Watts was an English minister, a theologian, and musician. He was a gifted poet and musician who wrote over 750 hymns. He died in 1748. Does it matter to you that Watts lived 272 years ago? Wait…Do not set him aside as too far back in history to be an influence.
Before you do, read his hymn of praise to God. Entitled “I Sing the Mighty Power of God,” this hymn was written as have already read-for children. Allow me to remind us of a significant truth about things written for children: Adults understand things written for children.
Yes, this is a 272-year-old hymn…as you read, sing praise to God. Think about the facts that Watts teaches us in his hymn:
*God is all powerful.
*All goodness comes from God.
*The marvels of His power and creativity surround us…they are inescapable.
*Everywhere, anywhere we are…God is present.
I sing the mighty pow’r of God, that made the mountains rise,
That spread the flowing seas abroad, and built the lofty skies.
I sing the wisdom that ordained the sun to rule the day;
The moon shines full at His command, and all the stars obey.
I sing the goodness of the Lord, who filled the earth with food,
Who formed the creatures through the Word, and then pronounced them good.
Lord, how Thy wonders are displayed, where’er I turn my eye,
If I survey the ground I tread, or gaze upon the sky.
There’s not a plant or flow’r below, but makes Thy glories known,
And clouds arise, and tempests blow, by order from Thy throne;
While all that borrows life from Thee is ever in Thy care;
And everywhere that we can be, Thou, God, art present there. Isaac Watts
So, sing.
Not to yourself.
Not to a friend.
Not to anything on this earth.
Sing to God.
Sing…
God is worthy of every song we offer Him.
He has given us life today. He alone is worthy of praise. Celebrate the MIGHTY POWER OF GOD…sing!
