Going Green?
What do you know about green? Remember green?
In a winter land of snow and ice, green seems a distant memory. Really, what do you know about green? Come with me to “green school.”
The color green defined in one website reads: “The hue of that portion of the visible spectrum lying between yellow and blue, evoked in the human observer by radiant energy with wavelengths of approximately 490 to 570 nanometers; any of a group of colors that may vary in lightness and saturation and whose hue is that of the emerald or somewhat less yellow than that of growing grass; one of the additive or light primaries.”
Was that too much?
Is this better? Green is the hue of an emerald, like growing grass.
Or perhaps you are thinking green as in “going green.” Green has other connotations. We associate it with earth stewardship. Someone “going green” is concerned about the environment. Going green is a phrase even picked up by businesses around the world. While it is a sincere movement by many to care for the earth, it is also a sales strategy companies use to generate business.
Consider this. God is the earth’s first environmentalist.
God made green. The color green was God’s creation.
God made living things green. Read Genesis 1:30… “And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.” And it was so.” (Seems like every living thing was a vegetarian in the beginning.)
God was “green” in the beginning. Read Genesis 1:31… “God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.” At the end of creating all things…earth and everything on and in it…God saw it was “good.” God is the earth’s first steward…still is.
Green is significant to people.
The color green calms the human soul. How does that work? Go back to the beginning. Let’s repeat it…God created green.
The color green is considered a gentle color. What is the origin of green gentleness? God.
Green is considered a safe color. Read Psalm 23:2… “He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters…” God as our Shepherd leads us to green pastures, a place of safety, a place of protection.
Finally, Green is a beautiful color. Not surprising when we consider its origins are from the mind of eternal God.
Examine the photos of the Drake Mallard.
Not only is the drake’s head calming, relaxing and gentle…it is iridescent green.
Iridescence occurs on the surfaces of some objects as the angle of illumination changes. Move to a different position with an iridescent object and the color changes. It makes sense in this way…God made green and He made light…How He makes the two work in this way is largely a mystery.
