He Knows
He thought his betrayal was secret. He had gone to the religious leaders days earlier. He hadn’t forgotten. But he was sure no one else knew. Then Passover came. With everything else happening he was sure no one knew. He did his best to act as though everything was normal. He began to think he could “pull off” this robbery of trust and friendship. He became sure no one knew he intended to betray Jesus. When nothing happened during their observance of the Passover, he was sure no one knew.
He forgot the most important thing. Judas did not consider who Jesus really was.
Jesus knew.
“After supper he took another cup of wine and said, “This cup is the new covenant between God and his people—an agreement confirmed with my blood, which is poured out as a sacrifice for you. “But here at this table, sitting among us as a friend, is the man who will betray me. For it has been determined that the Son of Man must die. But what sorrow awaits the one who betrays him.” The disciples began to ask each other which of them would ever do such a thing.”
Luke 22:20-23
We can imagine the utter surprise of Judas when Jesus spoke these words:
…”sitting among us as a friend, is the man who will betray me.”
Was Judas shocked? He thought his deception was hidden. He was bold even after Jesus told the disciples one of them would betray Him. The Gospel of Matthew records Judas as saying “Surely not I. Rabbi?” Jesus answered, “Yes, it is you.”
Jesus knew.
Judas could not deceive Him.
Neither can we.
Jesus never changes.
Jesus knows. Right now…forever.
You and I cannot deceive Him.
Yet-what will we do to attempt to deceive Jesus today?
Perhaps we’ve been indignant with Judas. It would be a proper response - after all, Judas betrayed Jesus! Jesus had never wronged Judas. Jesus loved Judas. Jesus was preparing to die for the sins of Judas. Maybe we should be indignant with our own behavior towards Jesus.
We have also betrayed Him. When we deny Him-we betray Him. When we break God’s commandments…we betray Jesus. And Jesus has never wronged you or me. It’s fact-Jesus loves you-and me. Jesus died on a Roman cross for you and me. He gave His life for us.
Jesus knows.
He knows our betraying hearts.
Yet…
He loves us.
What a true perfect friend and Savior we have in Jesus!
Jesus knows…
instead of hiding from Him …take all your troubles and temptations to betray …
to Him.
