Whose Son is This?
Think about truth.
What is truth?
Do we need truth?
How about this question: Would you agree-truth is often mixed with lies? It is not truth but a lie.
Whether we think of it or not, we have a most deadly enemy who constantly blends lies to truth. Another strategy of our most destructive enemy is to use humans to spread this blend of lies and truth.
Perhaps this will surprise you. One of the most effective ways Satan spreads lies is through human “experts.” You know them-they are the people the rest of us depend on for truth. Experts are those who are supposed to have special knowledge. An expert often has education degrees, specialized training so we look to them for truth. They are supposed to give us the honest answers. We believe experts. And that gives them authority.
Reliance on experts looks good “on paper.” The weak link in our confidence on experts is the fact that experts can be corrupted. Corruption comes through two factors: Satan and human sin.
Take these thoughts about truth to the Bible passage. Through the 20th chapter of Luke, the authority of Jesus was regularly questioned. Who did most of the questioning? The religious “experts.” The experts had blended lie with truth and the results were believable…but they were not truth. Jesus powerfully cleared up the lie with one question: (it’s underlined for emphasis…)
“Then Jesus said to them, “Why is it that they say the Christ is the son of David? David himself declares in the Book of Psalms:”‘ The Lord said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.”’ David calls him ‘Lord.’ How then can he be his son?”
While all the people were listening, Jesus said to his disciples, “Beware of the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets. They devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely.” Luke 20:41-47
What the religious experts were saying about Jesus sounded right. They used a reliable religious figure in Jewish history: King David. Yet they never used all that was recorded in the Bible. Want the truth? Truth is always found in the Bible. While the leaders gave part of the truth…Jesus quoted what David actually said. David called Jesus “Lord.” And forever-Jesus is Lord of all.
One more thing…these religious “experts” were hypocrites. Unfortunately, the sin that is in every human heart can also cause the “expert” the rest of us look to for leadership and truth to use their position for personal gain. At the end of Luke chapter 20, Jesus teaches us to beware of the religious “experts.” He said they dress the part. They delight in being put in places of honor. They speak with eloquent words…they make lengthy prayers. False religious “experts” however, are two faced. If it profits them, they will take the estate of a widow. There are religious “experts” who are greedy-they care only about self.
Dear friend…Jesus is the Perfect Expert of Experts. He loves both of us. Truth about Jesus is found in your Bible. Whose Son is this?
There is only one perfect expert. Jesus, the Son of God.
