Step One to Stress Relief

“And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? If then you are not able to do as small a thing as that, why are you anxious about the rest? Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass, which is alive in the field today, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith! And do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, nor be worried. For all the nations of the world seek after these things, and your Father knows that you need them. Instead, seek his kingdom, and these things will be added to you.”

Luke 12:25-31

How has your day been so far? What are you thinking about right now? How much time have you given to worry since you got out of bed?

Jesus tells us we can’t add even an hour to our lives by worry. He tells us “Look at the birds…look at the lilies and grass. Your Heavenly Father feeds them and clothes them.”

Really, we ought to watch the birds and flowers in bloom. Take time to be still in a place where you can see both today. Besides the beauty and wonder of birds and blooms they are living examples of the truth of what Jesus teaches-proof that worry is foolish-unneeded. Every bird & every bloom remind us-don’t be anxious! For peace of heart-All we need do is look. Is that too easy to believe?

Part of being anxious is the lurking realization that most of life is out of our control. In today’s verses Jesus tells us something that we can do. He says, “Do this first.” Jesus says it this way:

“Instead, seek his kingdom, and these things will be added to you.”

We can seek God. He is not hiding. Seeking God is within our control. Seeking God requires us to give Him time with us. The most difficult thing about seeking God is overcoming our natural inclination to neglect God and think we are too busy.

Yes, there are many things in our lives we cannot control. But if you are reading this God has given you another day. Do not be anxious today. Jesus tells us our remedy to overcome worries is to seek God. We can read. We can pray…overcoming worry is pretty easy.

Call it order if you like, sequence matters, seek God first. How do we seek God? If we can talk or think, we can seek God. Some call it prayer. If we can read we can look at God’s Word. Some call it the Bible. Jesus is the first step to anxiety relief. Seeking God first is not difficult…pray and read His Word. We don’t need to climb Mount Everest or be victorious in a race with a cheetah to seek God’s kingdom…just pray and read.

Truth-He is not hiding. He waits for us to seek Him.
