I Need a Sign

Ever heard someone say, I’ll believe in Jesus if I had a sign that He is real? You have. The trite saying, “I’ll believe it when I see it,” follows the same line of thought. “I need a sign,” to believe is nothing new. People said it during Jesus ministry on earth.

“When the crowds were increasing, he began to say, “This generation is an evil generation. It seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah. For as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so will the Son of Man be to this generation. The queen of the South will rise up at the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here. The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here.”

Luke 11:29-32

Many refuse to believe in Jesus because He cannot be seen. In this case, the line is “I can’t believe in something I can’t see.” They expect a physical sign.

Dear friend there are signs all around us! 5,000 stars visible on a clear night- 100s of thousands more beyond sight. The sun rises and sets each day with precision. The phases of the moon are so predictable we have charts to follow. Monarch butterflies migrate to Mexico on butterfly wings-they’ve never been there and they have no map. While you read this text your heart beats automatically and you breathe air-WE CANNOT SEE. If you accidentally drop your phone it will fall to the floor pulled by gravity-WHICH WE CANNOT SEE EITHER.

These thoughts raise a question. We have 5 senses. Does it seem wise to base our eternity on sight alone?

Fact: There are signs of God’s power and love everywhere. There is no moment in our lives when we cannot see them…but the greatest “sign” of God’s love we cannot see now-is Jesus.

For now, read the Bible…read about Jesus and His great love for us. The Bible is another powerful sign. And-For now look around you each day. Watch sunrise and sunset, the moon, listen to the birds, admire the beauty of spring…know that Jesus loves us and that He is more real than all we see and hear. He made it ALL!

There isn’t just ONE sign…there are an infinite number of them!

Jesus said it, “Something greater than Jonah is here.” He was referring to Himself. Believe in Jesus and we are saved!
