Matching Wits with Wit's Creator

What is wit? It is the shortcut to using the word intelligence.

What is the origin of human intelligence? To answer it developed over millions of years ignores human emotions and personality. Intelligence is God’s gift to humanity. Call it wit.

There is one liner given about wit: “Never match wits with an unarmed person.” Meaning it’s unwise to discuss truth with one who does not have the tools to understand.

The chief priests and teachers of the law made a mistake of attempting to match wits with the Creator of human intelligence. Jesus silenced them with one question:

“One day, as Jesus was teaching the people in the temple and preaching the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes with the elders came up and said to him, “Tell us by what authority you do these things, or who it is that gave you this authority.” He answered them, “I also will ask you a question. Now tell me, was the baptism of John from heaven or from man?” And they discussed it with one another, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ‘Why did you not believe him?’ But if we say, ‘From man,’ all the people will stone us to death, for they are convinced that John was a prophet.” So, they answered that they did not know where it came from. And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.” Luke 20:1-8

This is a hard question-give it honest thought: Do we try to match wits with wit’s Creator?

Do we at times think we know best?

Do we attempt to out reason the Creator of the Universe?

Do we believe we have the answers to life’s problems?

Sorry…more times than we would like to admit-we attempt to match wits with Jesus.

Jesus has all authority.

Jesus has all power…and knowledge. Human intelligence is corrupted by sin. We scam ourselves thinking that just because Jesus is not visible means He does not exist.  Our sinful hearts turn our God given intelligence against Him. We mistrust, we doubt, we deny and just like the chief priests and teachers of the law we argue with Jesus. Does it make you wonder? We attempt to match wits with wit’s Creator.

No one can out think God. But we still try. In spite of our stubborn hearts, Jesus calls to each of us with His invitation of love: “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28

Instead of questioning Jesus, may we use our wit to BELIEVE IN Jesus. He is the way the truth and the life-and wit’s Creator.
