The Cost

The Cost of Following Jesus

18 When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake. 19 Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.”

20 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”

21 Another disciple said to him, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”

22 But Jesus told him, “Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.” Matthew 8:18-22

Bold words.

“I’ll follow you wherever!”

(We cannot keep bold promises.)

“I have to do this first.”

(We do not know what things should be first.)

Could you live this life homeless?

Could you leave your family for Jesus?

Was Jesus unfair?

“Follow me,” He said, “Let the dead bury the dead.”

There is a cost to follow Jesus.

Jesus said, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.”

Deny? As in refuse and renounce?

“Take up your cross-follow me?”

The cost to follow Jesus is TEMPORARY things.

The reward?

Eternity.
