Then They Remembered

“8 Then they remembered his words. 9 When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others. 10 It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles. 11 But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense. 12 Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to himself what had happened.”  Luke 24:8-12

Can you identify one of the greatest human shortcomings?

Actually…the answer may surprise you:

We have short memories.

With short memories it is easy to forget the truth. This fact is especially clear in today’s text.

Jesus told the disciples He would be crucified and rise from the dead.

They forgot! It would seem His words on this subject would be so memorable that forgetting could not happen. He told them He would be crucified. Then He told them He would come alive again. That seems unforgettable. Yet, they forgot.

The truth is when the women returned from the tomb after seeing with their eyes and retelling the words of the angels spoke the disciples wouldn’t believe them.

Their “words seemed to them like nonsense.”

But Peter went to see for himself.

Consider Luke’s description of Peter’s response to the empty tomb: “He went away wondering to himself what had happened.”

Have we considered what happened centuries ago on a hill, and in a rock hewn tomb near Jerusalem, Israel? The death and resurrection of Jesus Christ is the world’s greatest event.

We forget also. Have we forgotten? We have such short memories.

What happened when the women were reminded by the angels?

They remembered. They believed.

Peter saw the empty tomb. He later spent the rest of his life reminding others that Jesus is alive. His words enabled thousands to believe what the women saw and heard in the tomb that day.

Don’t forget, remember-Jesus died for you and me. He was buried. The 3rd day He rose from the grave. Today He is alive! This is the eternal truth. This truth changes life…now on earth and forever in heaven.
