"Your Face...Your Way"

From the Bible, the book of Luke, we read…

“When John’s messengers had gone, Jesus began to speak to the crowds concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? What then did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Behold, those who are dressed in splendid clothing and live in luxury are in kings’ courts. What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. This is he of whom it is written, “‘Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you.’”

Luke 7:24-27

The people saw the messengers from John. They knew who they were. But, Jesus knows all things. He knew the people were thinking of John. So He helped them remember John’s mission. How quickly we forget.

Jesus accomplished this remembering with questions. The principal question-“What did you go out to see?” It was an important question. Three times Jesus asked the people “What did you go out to see?”

Then Jesus acknowledged He knew what they were thinking: John the Baptist was a prophet. Then, He told them something they were not considering-John the Baptist was more than a prophet. Jesus explained what He meant with the last words of the passage:

“‘Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you.”

John’s message was repent. To repent is to turn. John called the people to turn from their sins. What were they to turn to?

Jesus.

The One who came to earth to save us from our sins.

John’s message has no expiration date. It is in force today. Jesus used the word “your” twice in these words about John. He said “your face and your way.”

He means you and me. John the Baptist’s message of repentance is for you and me…He prepares the way for us to turn our face and see Jesus.

One more question, what does Jesus mean by the phrase “your way?” I think it is this: before you and I were born, God wrote the number of our days in His book. Think of it-God loves us so much He keeps track of our days. And-At that moment His plan for you and me was for us to know the love of Jesus.

It still is.

We have two possible “ways” for how we may live our lives.

Our way or God’s.

What do you think? Which is best?
