BEST of Tuesday and Wednesday

Once more.

The birds do not stop drinking water just because they have been highlighted on this blog. Neither did I stop taking photos. The photos in this blog are the best from an early spring Tuesday and Wednesday. The always favored Robin is included, along with the Chickadee. There are surprises. In this group you will see both male and female Cross bill Finches and a solitary Mourning Dove. Though there is no photo-camera wasn’t ready-there was a Hairy Woodpecker taking a drink yesterday. This is rare. Woodpeckers seldom come for water from the bird water on the deck railing. There is a photo of a male junco taking water-also a rare event.

You are invited again to view the BEST of Tuesday and Wednesday (At the heated bird water bowl.)

First the Robin

Next the Junco

Can you believe? A Mourning Dove!

The best for last…Cross bill Finches-Female first.

Think about the Cross bill finch for a moment…there is great truth in the beak…

Crossbill Finch

The obvious-a crossed bill.

What?

Crossed bills?

Created to feed on pine cones.

Slide bill under a cone scale-open the bill…

extract the seed with the tongue…

No other species with crossed bills.

Usually unseen or from a distance…

pine cones grow at treetop level.

To observe them is a gift.

A bird of the pine forests in mountains and northern North America and Europe.

They will eat sunflower seeds at our feeder…and drink water from the heated bird bath.

Can a bird brain develop a crossed bill?

Not in a million years.

Only a God brain can.

We can’t forget the Chickadee…a cold bird at that…
