We Need a Shepherd

There are three questions every person living must answer.

1.       Do you need a Shepherd to lead you through daily life?

2.       Could you use Someone who could wipe away every tear?

3.       If Someone offered you Living Water, would you drink it?

Do you need a shepherd? Every human needs a Shepherd. I know…you are not a sheep. Look at it this way; would it help if there were a perfect counselor you could turn to when you had questions you could not answer? What about the times you’ve said, “I’ll do it my way” and regret it later? We both know that has happened. It will happen again. We are stubborn. Sorry to be blunt, but honestly both of us can be obstinate. Regularly. Yes, we do not like anyone telling us what to do.

One of the fastest ways to get either one of us to say no is to have another person tell us to do something.

What if this shepherd knew your mind and heart? Not as well as you do…better. What if we both slowly discovered this Shepherd always had our best interests in mind? What if we discovered His way is perfect? Would we trust someone like this? Would everyday life be easier if we could listen to and follow this Shepherd each day? Honestly? It would.

There is such a shepherd…a human sheep shepherd. He is the perfect Shepherd…the expert on humans like you and me.

Next question…Is there pain in your life? How many tears have you shed today? Perhaps not today, but sorrow is a part of all human existence. Sadness has come to your life. It will come again. There are times our stubborn natures result in regret. Regret creates sadness. We have faced grief before, we will experience grief in the days ahead. We do not know when, but grief is ahead for both of us. These things are part of human suffering. We suffer from mistakes we have made.  Mistakes others make can bring us suffering. And tears come with grief and suffering. What if this Perfect Shepherd could wipe away every tear? No only is He able to lead us, to guide us; He is able to comfort us. This Shepherd can wipe away every tear…every, single, one. Doesn’t that sound good? It does to me, which is why I am sharing with you.

We are at the final question. Do you drink water? Of course. Did you know there are two kinds of water? I assure you, my mind is sound. There are two kinds of water. As you look at the photos you see earthly water. It is beautiful. It is a truly astonishing substance. It exists in 3 forms. There is a glass of liquid water near me as I write. Earthly water is one of God’s creations. Our lives depend on it. We just spoke of tears in the previous paragraph. Tears are made of water.

The second kind of water is Living Water.

The Shepherd we have been speaking of knows the source of Living water. His desire is to lead us, if we will follow, to God’s Living Water. You and I both know how good a drink of cold water is. How much better is God’s Living Water? Do you know where to find this Living water on your own? Neither do I. Which brings us back to the Shepherd we’ve been talking about.

Truth, we both need Someone to lead us…we make messes of life. Truth, sorrow and grief are part of being human. We need a Shepherd who can wipe away every tear. Does that still sound good? And, we know about the life-giving qualities of earthly water. (Ever thought about why water is such a miracle liquid?) Living water is far better…it promises eternal life.

Who is this Shepherd? Who is this One who can lead, wipe away tears, and guide us to Living water?

Maybe you know, but if not… It’s Jesus. He is the perfect Shepherd. This is good news. In these days we are living, we both need good news…actually, it’s the best news a human heart can ever hear. Last question, What will we do with Jesus? He is the good Shepherd.

For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; ‘he will lead them to springs of living water.’ ‘And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.’ Revelation 17:7
